Basic Info
Name:Major Margaret Houlihan
Bio

"She's the head nurse. He's the head twerp."

DEMOGRAPHICS
Fandom: M*A*S*H
Name: Major Margaret Houlihan
Age: appears to be around 30, though technically she –should- be a lot older.
Physical Appearance: considered very attractive by many, of medium height, with long blonde hair and blue eyes. Dresses in Army fatigues.
Education: presumably basic high school, nursing school, and most likely some sort of Army training.
Occupation: Regular Army Major (US Army Nurse Corps), head nurse at the 4077 M*A*S*H unit during the Korean War.
Significant Other: Margaret has had many ‘flames’ in her time at the 4077, but alas none have worked out that well. She had an affair with Frank Burns, which eventually ran its course, and she married Lieutenant Colonel Donald Penobscott. However, that marriage did not last very long, as Donald cheated on her. Currently single, she still hopes that one day she might find the right man to stay with.
Sexual Preference: straight

BIOGRAPHY
Margaret Houlihan might be described by some as an ‘Army brat’. Certainly it would seem she has known little else apart from military life. She was born in an Army hospital, and spent her childhood growing up on various Army bases. This was because her father was a Colonel (fairly well known in the service as ‘Howitzer Al’), and her mother was a member of the Army Nurse Corps. Margaret was the second of three Houlihan children – all girls. The family travelled around quite a bit because of her father’s career (her mother got her discharge from the service as soon as she was pregnant with her first child), but the base they seemed to frequent most often (or stayed on the longest) was Fort Ord.

Margaret followed in her parent’s footsteps in deciding upon a military career, joining the Army Nurse Corps as soon as she could. She’d been in the service for 10 years before the beginning of the Korean War (finally achieving the rank of Major), where she was sent to the 4077 as the head nurse for the outfit. It was there that she met Major Frank Burns, one of the ‘surgeons’ (and some would use that term very loosely here). She was attracted to him initially because they shared similar beliefs, but it wasn’t long before she was engaged in a romantic relationship with the man (despite the fact that said man was already married). Together, the pair found themselves battling the antics of Captains Benjamin ‘Hawkeye’ Pierce and ‘Trapper John’ McIntyre, and criticising the leadership of Lt. Colonel Henry Blake. Many a day was spent composing and filing formal complaints.

Things came to a kind of turning point when Henry was sent home, and the Army appointed a new Commanding Officer for the unit – one Colonel Sherman T. Potter. Margaret found herself liking Colonel Potter, who eventually became a kind of father figure to her. It also marked the breaking down of her relationship with Frank. When she goes on leave to Tokyo, she meets Lieutenant Colonel Donald Penobscot, who she falls madly in love with. The pair are engaged, and later married (which eventually leads to Frank being discharged…but that’s another story).

Margaret also seems to mellow over time, to a more ‘human’, friendly individual, who developed better relationships with her nurses, as well as finally resolving her differences with Hawkeye Pierce (and getting on with new surgeon B.J. Hunnicutt).

Another thing to disappear was her old nickname of ‘Hot Lips’ – long established in her career, and used frequently in the early days of the 4077. Over time, it was referred to less and less, as she became known more as a ‘Margaret’, and less of ‘Major Houlihan’ or ‘Hot Lips’.

Near the end of the war, Margaret was sent with Pierce to a battalion aid station. They were on the way back, and were almost at the 4077 when their jeep must have hit something. Because when she came to, Margaret found herself alone in what appeared to be some kind of park. Which unbeknownst to her, was not only in a completely different country, but several decades in the future as well.

QUICK FACTS
Personality in seven words or less: strict, passionate, devoted, intelligent.
How Others Perceive Your Character: Most would probably initially see her as a strict, by-the-book woman, focused on her Army career. Someone who does not suffer fools gladly. But those who know her or whom she trusts would see a more caring side to her – a warm, funny woman who has needs, wants and desires just like everybody else.
Beliefs, Convictions, Morals: We’re not told (to my knowledge) whether Margaret is religious or not, but she would certainly have strong belief in the Army and the way things should be run – seeing that she has known nothing else for practically her entire life.
Reason(s) for Escaping to Canada: She didn’t. Last Margaret remembers, she was coming back from the aid station with Hawkeye. She thinks the jeep hit something, and next thing she knows, she is wandering in some kind of strange park. In Canada.
Their DHAs [Dreams, Hopes, and Aspirations] for Canada: adapt to life in present day Canada (as opposed to 1950s Korea – there’s probably quite a fair amount of catching up to do). And maybe give living a civilian life a try?

TWENTY QUESTIONS
[Note: These can be one word answers or fragments. If any of you've seen Lipton's 'ITAS' you know how this works]

1. What turns them on: Love
2. What turns them off: pointless deaths, and the people we couldn’t save.
3. Would they see a shrink: only if it was Sidney.
4. Worst Childhood experience: my parents announcing their divorce.
5. Favorite Film: ‘My Darling Clementine’. If only for the memories associated with watching it. (And don’t tell Pierce this, but also the ‘Yankee Doodle Doctor’ film that he and McIntyre, er, ‘edited’.)
6. Favorite Song: The Army Goes Rolling Along
7. Favorite Word: home
8. Least Favorite Word: incoming wounded
9. Favorite Curse Word: no particular favourite. The usual standard ‘colourful phrases’ apply here.
10. Best gift ever received: when I was made head nurse at the 4077.
11. Sound or Noise they hate: choppers. Or any loud noise, really.
12. Sound or Noise they love: laughter.
13. Do they know the answer to 64 million dollar question: no, but it seems like something Klinger would know.
14. [Complete the sentence] ... All the world's a stage...and we’re the ones who keep the actors alive.
15. Did Yoko Ono really break up the Fab Four: …who?
16. Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee: Dad (and Colonel Potter).
17. Half full or half empty: half full (so fill 'er up!)
18. Coke or Pepsi: anything as long as it’s not the stuff from Pierce and Hunnicutt’s still, which they claim is alcohol.
19. If they were a Jellybean flavor, which one: probably something with a tough outside, and a soft and sweet inside.
20. And, finally, if Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?:“You did good. Now come on inside – there’s lots of people waiting to meet you.”

ANYTHING NON-CANON?
Margaret is mostly from the TV series with a little of the book and movie ‘verses thrown in, though it might not all affect her personally (as her fate in the book series is just a little, um, ‘weird’ even for AV ^_^), but it’ll be there.

For example, she has an older sister who decided she wanted to take up religious orders, and apparently heads up some ‘crazy sect’ in New Orleans. (The family don’t really talk about her that much).

But essentially, she follows the TV series regarding background and history (including how her nickname came to be - established, rather than coined by Pierce, Trapper et al).
